What is The Menopause?
It is a biological stage in every woman’s life that signals the permanent end of menstruation (no more periods!) and fertility. It is defined as occurring 12 months after your last menstrual period (for women reaching menopause naturally)
What Symptoms Might I Experience?
Right let’s get the factual bit done! Then we can start on the HEALING!!!
Below is a list of symptoms that you may (or may not) experience in the months or years leading up to Menopause: –
- Irregular periods
- Sudden onset or worsening of PMS
- Vaginal dryness / itchiness / soreness
- Hot flushes
- Night sweats
- Sleep problems
- Mood changes
- Weight gain and slowed metabolism
- Thinning hair and dry skin
- Loss of breast fullness or sore / swollen breasts
- Change in sex drive
- Memory problems
- Poor concentration
- Urinary symptoms (stress incontinence, more prone to UTI)
- Depression, anxiety, panic attacks and irritability
- Joint and muscle pain
Symptoms, including changes in menstruation, are different for every woman. Most likely, you’ll experience some irregularity in your periods before they end.
Skipping periods during perimenopause is common and expected. Often, menstrual periods will skip a month and return, or skip several months and then start monthly cycles again for a few months. Periods also tend to happen on shorter cycles, so they are closer together.
It is important to note though that despite irregular periods, pregnancy is possible. If you’ve skipped a period but aren’t sure you’ve started the menopausal transition, consider a pregnancy test.
So that is a lot of symptoms but please remember. You WILL NOT get all these symptoms at the same time! Some you won’t get at all. Some will be totally bearable.
